Text message basics for a small business

Get permission, say who you are, and make it easy to opt out.

3 minute read

Get permission first

Only text people who agreed to hear from you by text. Put a clear checkbox on your forms and say what kinds of messages they will get and about how often.

Say who you are

Start the first message with your business name. People ignore texts from numbers they do not know.

Make it easy to stop

Include a way to opt out, such as replying STOP. Honor it right away. UpStack saves an opt-out to the contact and skips that person on later sends.

Keep it short and useful

Reminders, confirmations and quick answers work well by text. Save long messages for email.

Know your local rules

Rules for commercial texts differ by country and state, and they change. This page is general information, not legal advice. Ask your text provider and a lawyer if you are unsure.
